Rocca d'Orcia
A fortress on a volcanic spire — one of the most dramatic medieval sites in the valley
At the foot of a volcanic spire south of Castiglione d'Orcia, the hamlet of Rocca d'Orcia clusters around the base of the Rocca di Tentennano — a medieval tower fortress that has watched over this stretch of the Val d'Orcia since the 11th century. The hamlet itself consists of about thirty stone houses, a small square, a single trattoria, and a path that climbs to the fortress above. From the battlements of the Rocca di Tentennano, the view is extraordinary: north across the flat plain of the Orcia river to the hills of Pienza, east toward Monte Amiata, west toward Montalcino and its vineyards. Very few tourists make it here. That is entirely to their loss.

Rocca di Tentennano
The Tower That Controlled the Valley
The Rocca di Tentennano was first built in the 11th century to guard the ford of the Orcia river below — a critical crossing point on the Via Francigena. The tower changed hands many times: the Salimbeni family of Siena, the Aldobrandeschi counts, eventually the Sienese Republic. Today the fortress is open for visits from April to October; the climb is steep (15 minutes) but the summit views justify every step. In the right light — early morning or late afternoon — the tower silhouette against the sky is one of the defining images of the Val d'Orcia.
The Hamlet
Thirty Houses and a Trattoria
Rocca d'Orcia is one of the smallest inhabited medieval hamlets in southern Tuscany. The stone houses are built directly against the volcanic rock of the spire — some rooms are carved into the stone itself. The single square has a wellhead and a bar that opens in the mornings. The trattoria serves simple local food (pici al ragù, ribollita, grilled meats) and is often full at Sunday lunch with locals from Castiglione. There is nothing to buy and nowhere to stay, and the silence after the visitors leave is total.
