Campiglia d'Orcia

High above the valley, where the forest begins and the silence is complete

Campiglia d'Orcia sits high on the western flank of Monte Amiata, part of the sprawling Castiglione d'Orcia municipality that extends from the valley floor to the volcanic summit above. The village is small — a few hundred inhabitants at most — and commands an extraordinary position: from its main piazza, the entire Val d'Orcia spreads out to the north, with Pienza visible on its ridge, the Orcia winding through the valley floor, and on clear days the profile of the Apennines far to the east. Behind the village, the chestnut and oak forest of Monte Amiata begins almost immediately, with marked trails that climb toward the summit nature reserve.

Il Borgo

Between the Valley and the Forest

Campiglia d'Orcia is the kind of place that rewards the visitor who arrives without expectations. The medieval stone buildings are compact and well-kept; the church has a modest but dignified interior. The main square has a bar that is open most of the year and a fountain whose water comes directly from the mountain springs above. The local festival in summer draws people from the surrounding villages for an evening of music and food in the piazza. In winter the village is quiet — really quiet, in the way that only high-altitude places can be — and the snow, when it comes, stays for days rather than hours.

Hiking

Gateway to Monte Amiata Trails

Campiglia d'Orcia is an excellent starting point for hiking the western slopes of Monte Amiata. The Anello della Montagna — the ring path that circles the summit — passes near the village and connects to a network of trails through the ancient forests. The summit of Monte Amiata (1,738 m) can be reached in 3-4 hours from the village on foot; the path passes through chestnut groves, beech forest, and open meadows. In winter, the nearby Amiata ski area offers modest downhill runs; in summer the same slopes are ideal for mountain biking and hiking.
