Buonconvento

A complete medieval brick town where pilgrims rested on their way to Rome

Buonconvento sits at the confluence of the Ombrone and Arbia rivers at the northern edge of the Val d'Orcia, where the Via Francigena crossed from the Crete Senesi into the valley. Its name — "good convent" or "good gathering place" — tells you what it was: a safe stopping point for medieval pilgrims walking south toward Rome. The town walls are almost entirely intact, built of the same warm terracotta brick as the houses inside. Walk through the main gate and the medieval streetscape closes around you; there are no cars, few tourists, and the Saturday market still fills the main street as it has for centuries.

The Medieval Town

Intact Walls, Intact Life

The walls of Buonconvento were built by the Sienese Republic in the 14th century and survive in remarkable condition. The main gate, the Porta Senese, leads directly to the Via Soccini — the main street — which runs straight through the town in the classic via francigena settlement pattern. The brick buildings are compact and uniform, their lower floors often converted into small shops and trattorias. The town is still genuinely lived in: the bar in the main square is full in the morning, the alimentari sells local pecorino and salami, and the weekend passeggiata is a real community event.

Museo d'Arte Sacra

A Surprising Collection of Sienese Masterpieces

The Museo d'Arte Sacra della Val d'Arbia in Buonconvento holds a collection that would be remarkable in a city ten times the size. Works by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Sano di Pietro, Matteo di Giovanni and other Sienese masters fill the rooms of a former medieval building. The collection was assembled from local churches and convents, and includes several altarpieces that remained in the area where they were painted — giving them a context and immediacy that museum pieces often lose. Open Tuesday to Sunday; entry is affordable and rarely crowded.
