Castello di Spedaletto
A medieval fortress-hospice on the most beautiful road in Italy
Drive east from Pienza on the SP146 — the cypress-lined strada provinciale that appears in every Val d'Orcia photograph — and after a few kilometres the Castello di Spedaletto rises from the flat fields on the left, its medieval tower and battlemented walls absolutely intact. The castle dates to the 12th century, when it served as a hospitale — a hospice for pilgrims walking the Via Francigena from northern Europe to Rome. Today it is a working agricultural estate producing wine, olive oil, and saffron. The exterior can be admired from the road; the estate offers wine tastings and agriturismo stays, making it one of the rare places in the Val d'Orcia where you can sleep inside medieval walls.

Storia
From Pilgrim Hospice to Wine Estate
The name Spedaletto — "little hospital" — refers to the castle's original function as a hospitale run by a religious order to care for pilgrims on the Via Francigena. By the 13th century it had become a fortified stronghold under Sienese control. The square tower, the crenellated walls, and the internal courtyard all survive from the medieval period. In subsequent centuries the castle passed through various noble families before becoming the agricultural estate it is today. The surrounding farmland — cypresses, wheat fields, sunflowers in summer, the ochre-gold of harvested fields in autumn — forms one of the most photographed landscapes in the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Estate Today
Wine, Olive Oil, and Saffron Among Medieval Walls
The Castello di Spedaletto estate produces Orcia DOC wines (Sangiovese-based), extra virgin olive oil from centuries-old trees, and — a local specialty — saffron. The Crete Senesi and Val d'Orcia have produced saffron since the Middle Ages; the bright orange strands were worth more than gold in medieval spice trade. The estate's agriturismo rooms are within the castle walls themselves, offering an experience that is authentically historic rather than merely theatrical. Wine tastings can be booked in advance; cycling and hiking routes on the estate connect to the SP146 and to the broader Val d'Orcia trail network.
