Where Italy's most celebrated wine is born — and time is measured in vintages
On a high hill at the southern edge of the Crete Senesi and the northern edge of the Val d'Orcia, Montalcino has been producing wine since the medieval period. But it was not until 1888 that Ferruccio Biondi Santi first isolated the Sangiovese Grosso clone — now called Brunello — and aged it in large oak casks for years rather than months. The result was a wine unlike anything Italy had produced: dark, tannic, austere, capable of lasting a century. Today the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is one of the most collected wines in the world, and the town — which looks almost exactly as it did in the 14th century — remains its compact, unhurried home.

A Wine That Changed Italy
Brunello must be 100% Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello clone) and aged a minimum of five years (six for Riserva) before release, of which at least two are in oak. The result is a wine of extraordinary complexity and longevity — great vintages are still drinking beautifully at 30, 40, even 50 years. The wine zone surrounds Montalcino in a circle of roughly 3,500 hectares. With over 200 producers, the range of styles is wide: some opt for traditional large Slavonian oak casks, others use French barriques. The Enoteca Fortezza inside the medieval fortress offers a guided introduction with tastings from multiple producers.

The Last Sienese Stronghold
The Rocca (fortress) of Montalcino was built by the Sienese in 1361. In 1555, when Siena fell to the Medici and Florence, a group of Sienese exiles — the so-called "Republic of Siena in Montalcino" — held out here for four more years before finally surrendering in 1559. The fortress is now a monument, its battlements open to walk, its internal courtyard home to the Enoteca Fortezza where you can taste Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. The view from the walls takes in the entire southern Val d'Orcia: Sant'Antimo, Monte Amiata, and on clear days the sea.
