Monticchiello
The most perfectly preserved small village in the Val d'Orcia
Six kilometres south of Pienza, the road climbs a tight ridge to a completely intact medieval village. Monticchiello has not changed its outline since the 14th century: the same circuit of walls, the same gate, the same central piazza with its church and the remains of a small fortress. Inside the walls, about 200 people live year-round — farmers, pensioners, a handful of artisans. In summer the population triples, drawn by the Teatro Povero, but for most of the year Monticchiello is quiet to the point of seeming abandoned. That silence is the point.

A Theatre Made by the Village, for the Village
Every July and August, the inhabitants of Monticchiello write, direct, and perform their own outdoor theatre production — La Commedia. Founded in 1967 during a period of rural depopulation and social change, the Teatro Povero (Poor Theatre) was from the beginning a form of collective autobiography: the village telling its own story, in its own dialect, to an audience of outsiders. More than fifty years later it continues, with the script changing each year to reflect what the village has been through. Performances are in the central piazza, under the stars.

Walking the Walls
The circuit of medieval walls takes about twenty minutes to walk. From the northern corner, the view south takes in the entire Val d'Orcia — the rolling clay hills, the distant silhouette of Radicofani, and on clear days Monte Amiata. The church of San Leonardo e Cristoforo contains a Gothic fresco (Madonna with Child and Saints, 14th century) in excellent condition. There is one cafe in the piazza, open in the mornings, and a small restaurant that opens for lunch. There are no souvenir shops. There is nothing for sale.
