Petroio

A village that has made terracotta for centuries — and still does

Petroio is a small hilltop village in the municipality of Trequanda, set in the rolling clay landscape of the Crete Senesi between Pienza and Siena. What distinguishes it from the many other beautiful hilltop villages of the area is a craft tradition that has been alive here for at least five centuries: the production of terracotta — unglazed fired clay — used for roof tiles, floor tiles, amphorae, garden pots, and the whole range of functional objects that the Sienese countryside has always required. The clay of the Crete Senesi is particularly fine-grained and plastic; the terracotta it produces is a warm amber-red that weathers beautifully and lasts for generations.

La Terracotta

Five Centuries of Fired Clay

The terracotta tradition in Petroio is documented from the 15th century, though it likely predates that by several generations. At the height of production, there were multiple workshops in and around the village, supplying building materials to the great estates of the Val d'Orcia and beyond. Today a small number of artisans continue the tradition using traditional methods: hand-shaping on the wheel or in moulds, slow drying, wood-fired kilns. The Museo della Terracotta in the village tells the history of the craft and displays historic pieces from local workshops alongside contemporary production. Visits by appointment; several artisans also sell directly from their workshops.

Il Borgo

Medieval Architecture and Clay Landscape

Beyond the pottery tradition, Petroio is simply a beautiful small village: medieval stone buildings on a hilltop, a church with a good carved portal, views across the pale clay hills of the Crete Senesi in every direction. The village is part of the broader Trequanda municipality and shares the quiet, genuine character of the surrounding area — very few tourists, no organised attractions beyond the terracotta museum, a bar in the main square. The road up to the village passes through typical Crete Senesi landscape: bare clay hills, an occasional cypress, the geometry of ploughed fields.
