Bagni San Filippo
A forest thermal village — with a free natural waterfall in the trees
On the southern slopes of Monte Amiata, where the road from Castiglione d'Orcia climbs through chestnut forest, the hamlet of Bagni San Filippo has been a thermal destination since at least medieval times. Unlike Bagno Vignoni — which is famous and sometimes crowded — Bagni San Filippo remains small, quiet, and almost accidental: a handful of spa hotels, a few simple restaurants, and paths into the forest that lead to the Fosso Bianco, the free natural thermal stream that is the reason most people come. The water here is volcanic in origin, emerging from the Monte Amiata geothermal system at temperatures between 48°C and 52°C.

The Spa Hotels
Soaking in Comfort
Several hotels in and around Bagni San Filippo offer access to private thermal pools fed by the volcanic spring. The most famous is the Hotel Terme San Filippo — an old-fashioned Italian thermal hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, spa treatments, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that exists only in places that have been helping people feel better for several centuries. Day-use access to hotel pools is available on some days (call ahead). The contrast between the private hotel experience and the wild free pools in the forest above is total — and both are worth having.
The Forest Above
Chestnut Trees and Thermal Steam
Above the village, a path leads through a dense stand of chestnut trees — ancient, enormous, their branches meeting overhead — into the Fosso Bianco. In autumn the chestnuts fall and the ground is carpeted; in winter the thermal steam rises through cold air into the bare branches; in summer the canopy provides shade for the walk. The contrast between the cool forest and the warm water is one of the physical pleasures of this place. The white calcite formations of the Fosso Bianco glow in the green shadow of the trees.
